Side effects of Augmentin 625 Duo
Most people take Augmentin 625 Duo without serious problems, but side effects in the stomach and gut are common, and diarrhoea is the most frequent. You can report side effects to the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India helpline, 1800-180-3024.
Uncommon or mild

- Thrush: white patches in the mouth, or itching and discharge from the vagina
- Indigestion or stomach discomfort

- Headache or dizziness
Rare but serious: get medical help
- Signs of a severe allergic reaction: swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing or fainting. Get emergency help immediately
- A widespread rash with blisters, peeling skin, or sores in the mouth or eyes, or a rash with fever and swollen glands
- Severe or watery diarrhoea that does not stop, or diarrhoea with blood or mucus and stomach cramps, during the course or up to two months after it
- Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools or pain in the upper right side of the tummy. Liver problems can appear up to several weeks after the course ends
- Repeated vomiting a few hours after each dose, with paleness or drowsiness, especially in children
- Chest pain together with signs of an allergic reaction
- Unusual bruising or bleeding, or fever with a rash, swollen glands and feeling very unwell, which can be signs of a rare blood or immune problem

Who should be careful
Augmentin 625 Duo is not suitable for everyone. Tell your doctor before taking it if any of the following apply to you.
- Allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, cephalosporins or any other antibiotic: it must not be taken by people who have had an allergic reaction to penicillins or cephalosporins
- Jaundice or liver problems in the past after taking amoxicillin with clavulanic acid: it must not be taken again
- Liver disease: the doctor may check your liver function during treatment
- Kidney disease: a lower dose or fewer doses a day may be needed
- Glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis): amoxicillin very often causes a rash in people with this viral infection, so it should be avoided
- Pregnancy: it is used in pregnancy only when a doctor judges it necessary. One study linked its use in women whose waters broke early, before labour, with a serious bowel problem in newborns
- Breastfeeding: small amounts pass into breast milk. Watch the baby for diarrhoea, thrush, rash or poor feeding, and tell your doctor
- Long courses: other germs such as yeasts can overgrow, and the doctor may check your blood, liver and kidney function
- Colds, flu and most coughs and sore throats are caused by viruses: this antibiotic does not help them
If someone takes too much
Taking more Augmentin 625 Duo than prescribed can cause stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, with loss of body fluids. Rarely, very large doses can cause fits or crystals in the urine that harm the kidneys. If someone has taken too much, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital immediately and take the medicine pack with you.
Common questions
Why does Augmentin 625 Duo cause diarrhoea?
The antibiotic also kills some of the helpful bacteria in the gut. Mild diarrhoea is common, so drink plenty of fluids. Contact a doctor quickly if diarrhoea is severe or watery, has blood or mucus, or comes with cramps or fever, even weeks after the course.
Can I take Augmentin 625 Duo if I am allergic to penicillin?
No. It contains amoxicillin, a penicillin, and must not be taken by people who have had an allergic reaction to penicillins or cephalosporins. Tell every doctor and pharmacist about any antibiotic allergy.
Can Augmentin 625 Duo affect the liver?
Rarely. It can cause hepatitis or jaundice, more often in older people, men and those on long courses, and signs can appear up to several weeks after the course ends. Get medical advice for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools or tummy pain. People who had jaundice with it before must not take it again.
