Stomach (gastric) and duodenal ulcers are sores in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. Together called peptic ulcers, they are mainly caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria and by regular use of NSAID painkillers such as ibuprofen. Medicines that lower stomach acid, such as proton pump inhibitors, are used to help ulcers heal, with antibiotics when Helicobacter pylori is found. Get urgent help for vomiting blood, vomit that looks like ground coffee, black sticky stools or severe tummy pain.
