Fever is a raised body temperature, usually 38°C or above. It is often caused by the body fighting an infection such as a cold, flu or another viral illness. Medicines used to bring down fever include paracetamol and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen; they ease discomfort but do not treat the cause. See a doctor if fever lasts more than 3 days, is very high or keeps getting worse, and during dengue season get a fever checked by a doctor, because painkillers such as ibuprofen and aspirin are avoided in dengue.
