Acidity is a common term in India for heartburn and acid reflux, a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid. It happens when acid travels up from the stomach towards the throat, and when it keeps happening it is called gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Medicines used to relieve it include antacids, which neutralise acid quickly for a short time, and proton pump inhibitors such as pantoprazole, which lower how much acid the stomach makes. See a doctor if you have heartburn most days, or if it comes with difficulty swallowing, repeated vomiting, black stools or weight loss without trying.
