Abdominal cramps are squeezing or colicky pains in the tummy, often caused by spasm of the muscles of the stomach and intestines. Common causes include indigestion, trapped wind, a stomach bug and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Antispasmodic medicines such as dicyclomine are used to relieve spasm-type cramps, sometimes combined with a painkiller. Sudden or severe pain, pain that does not go away, or pain with fever, vomiting or blood in the stools needs a doctor's check first, because it can be a sign of appendicitis or another serious problem.
